How to watch movies with friends on Discord (and a better way)
Screen sharing a movie on Discord is the obvious first try, but everyone ends up watching through one person's upload. Kinoo takes a different approach: it plays the video link for everyone at once.

How to watch a movie on Discord
On desktop, join a voice channel, choose Share Your Screen, pick the video player window and turn on app audio. Others click your live stream to watch. Screen sharing also works from the Discord mobile app inside a voice channel.
The problem with screen sharing a movie
The picture is uploaded from your connection to everyone else. On an average connection it gets blocky, audio stutters, and when your internet slows down everyone falls behind.
Synced playback: full quality for everyone
If the movie has a link (YouTube, MP4, M3U8), put it in a Kinoo room. Each person streams it directly and only the playback position is shared, so quality doesn't depend on one person's upload.
No link? Two options
Kinoo doesn't do screen sharing. Upload the file somewhere that gives you a direct link, such as your own cloud storage, or use Discord's screen share for that one movie.
How to get started
- 1
Create a room
Make a Kinoo room and invite friends with the link.
- 2
Paste the movie link
YouTube, MP4 or M3U8: it plays for everyone.
- 3
Chat while you watch
Use the room chat, or voice chat on a paid plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is screen sharing or synced playback better for movies?
Synced playback, because each person watches in full quality. Screen sharing is for content that has no link.
Does Kinoo have screen sharing?
No. Kinoo plays the video link for everyone in sync instead.
Is Kinoo a Discord alternative for movie nights?
For movies with a link, yes: synced playback, text chat and (on paid plans) voice chat in one room, nothing to install.
